Poster, 'No catch' AIDS which states you will not get AIDS from swimming pools, one of 800 health education posters produced for the Central Council for Health Education (1927-69), Health Education Council (1969-87) and Health Education Authority (1987-2000).
AIDS was first described in 1981 and the virus (HIV) which causes it was first described in 1983. There was and still is some confusion among the public over how the disease spreads. It is a sexually transmitted disease and can also be spread through infected blood via blood transfusions or sharing needles. This poster informs people that AIDS cannot be caught by using swimming pools. Hugging, shaking hands or sharing glasses also do not spread the disease.
