The Nintendo Entertainment System, or NES, was released in North America in 1985 and Europe in 1986, after it had been launched in Asia as the Famicom in 1983. Nearly 62 million consoles were sold before it was discontinued in 1995. The bestselling NES game was 'Super Mario Brothers', the lead character 'Mario' would become the official mascot of Nintendo.
