Scissors, used for the opening of Plymouth Station by Dr Richard Beeching, 26th March 1962. These scissors were used by British Railways chairman Dr Richard Beeching in 1962 to open the modernised Plymouth station. While Dr Beeching has gone down in history for very different ‘cuts’ – slashing the size of the nation’s railway through line closures – he also presided over important modernisation to areas including inter-city passenger services and freight.
