1 letter and two newspaper cuttings relating to William Hedley. The letter, which was written on behalf of John Bell by John Walton, is dated March 26th, 1883. It is addressed to Geo. Hedley Esq., Newcastle, and relates to the construction of locomotives. When John Bell had the letter written he was in his 85th year, and the letter relates to an event in 1822, when he drove a steam vessel, to win Barges William Hedley's experiment in 1812. The first newspaper cutting, by M. Archer, of Newcastle, claims that William Hedley was the inventor of the steam locomotive and was just as important as Stephenson. The third article is from The Yorkshire Evening Press, September 12, 1925, and is entitled Father of the Puffing Billy. The article claims that William Hedley was the inventor of the steam locomotive. All three items are encapsulated.
