Healer’s circlet (necklace), decorated with red and blue beads, cowrie shells, front has fringe of pendant beads, west-central Africa, 1880-1920

A circlet (necklace) from a healer's costume. It is decorated with red and blue beads, cowrie shells and a fringe of pendant beads hanging at the front. The healer's costume adds to the drama of healing ceremonies, demonstrating that the cause of illness is serious and thus the therapy is more intense.
