Born in Holland, Buitendijk travelled extensively and moved to Britain in 1990. He studied documentary photography at Newport School of Art and here he explored the apparent contradiction of using documentary skills to record an artificial reality; that of films. He has been a film stills photographer since 1997.

The photographer was in the thick of the battle as it was being filmed, dressed in costume so that if he accidently appeared in wide shots in the film he would not be conspicuous.
