Dirty hands being washed illustrate the anti-smoking message: 'You can't scrub your lungs clean'. Clear evidence by the mid-1970s said smoking caused health problems. These include chronic bronchitis, emphysema, heart disease, strokes, and cancers of the tongue, jaw, stomach, lung and oesophagus. The Health Education Council, who issued this poster in the late 1970s, claimed that lung cancer killed ten times more smokers than non-smokers.
