Freesat came together formally in May 2007 as a non-profit joint venture between the BBC and ITV. It is a free digital satellite TV service currently offering over 140 digital channels including radio and interactive services, with High Definition from the BBC and ITV.

Set top boxes that could work with televisions to receive channels in additional to the standard free-to-air terrestrial broadcasts became increasingly popular throughout the 2000s. Freeview was an digital free-to-air service introduced by a consortium of broadcast companies in 2002. The collection also includes a set top box for receiving programmes from cable television provider Telewest and a satellite television receiver.
