Introduced to the market in September 2004, the iPod 3rd Generation, also known as iPod Dock Connector, was the third playback music device released by Apple and a change from the two previous iPod models, which had a scroll-wheel that physically turned (first generation) or one that was touch-operated (second generation), by introducing touch control buttons and wheel. This was the first iPod to use the 30-pin connector that was used by Apple devices until 2012 when the Lightening connector was introduced and it offered four different capacities 10, 15, 20, and 40 GB. When first released, the 3rd generation iPod used Musicmatch software on the PC, later replaced when Apple released their iTunes software for Windows in 2003. The iPod 3rd Generation was available on the market until 2004 when it was replaced by the 4th generation iPod which had a click wheel.
