Surgical drill for internal fixation of fractures, metal and gold plated, Swiss, c.1967. The drill was presented to Richard Batten (orthopaedic surgeon, Birmingham) by Martin Allgower (orthopaedic surgeon, Switzerland) in about 1967. Richard Batten introduced the AO (Arbeitsgemeinschaft fur Osteosynthesis fragen - Association for the Study of Internal Fixation) surgical technique in the UK.
