Gluteal implant used for body contouring plastic surgery, made by Silimed, Brazil, 2009-2010

Implants are filled with medical grade silicone gel with a consistency and hardness to resemble the tissues of the area and maintain resistance. Surgery is required to insert the implants and is generally only available to those who can afford to pay for it. Recovery along with the general risks associated with an operation (blood loss, infection), means that undergoing a procedure requires serious thought.

Founded in 1978, the company pioneered printing individual serial numbers on their implants – now an essential tool in tracking, particularly when issues of patient health are reported.
