John Davies (born 1949) is one of Britain's best-known photographers, famous for his striking black and white landscape images. Interested in both urban and rural landscapes, he is a prolific photographer whose work commands international recognition.
Incongruous elements are often present in his work – industrial buildings in rural settings, for example, or ancient buildings flanked by flyovers to emphasise change of use and the effect of development.
In this photograph, the landscape is dominated by the colliery and its close neighbour the power station, whose four huge cooling towers occupy the middle distance.
