Shell of a Riversimple hydrogen powered car, Hyrban model, designed and manufactured by Riversimple Movement Ltd, British, 2010

The Hyrban prototype hydrogen fuel cell electric car was developed by Riversimple using a whole system design approach. Rather than trying to fit hydrogen power into the existing concept of a car, they started from scratch to make their cars as efficient and as environmentally friendly as possible. The car had to be as light as possible to get maximum range from the hydrogen fuel cell so they used composite material rather than metal for the body, an idea inspired by Riversimple founder Hugo Spowers' experience as a motorsport engineer. The radical design of the car's power unit set in motion a positive feedback loop with lighter or eliminated components enabling further reductions in weight and increased efficiency. Ideas developed in the Hyrban have informed the design of Riversimple's Rasa which was in beta testing in 2021 and 2022.
