A photograph of a little girl standing on a bollard at Avonmouth Dock holding a bunch of bananas, taken in December 1945 by C Smith for the Daily Herald.
The photograph shows Zoya Smith holding some of the first bananas imported into Britain after the end of the second world war. This fruit came from the SS 'Tilapa', docked at Avonmouth Dock in Bristol. During the war most foodstuffs were rationed, especially those brought from overseas. Rationing in Britain officially ended in 1954.
