'Opportunity Knocks' was a long running talent contest on independent television, which ran between 1956 and 1978. Various acts performed before a live audience, who could register their approval by means of a 'clap-o-meter' and viewers at home were also invited to vote. The programme was extremely popular, with its highest viewing figure in 1974 of 8.6 million.
