'Pasha and Bayadere'

Albumen print from a collodion negative by Roger Fenton: Pasha and Bayadere, 1858.

An albumen print photograph entitled 'Pasha and Bayadere' taken by Roger Fenton in 1858.

The photograph shows a dancing girl performing for the enjoyment of the Pasha, as a musician plays a stringed instrument beside her. Although Fenton had visited Constantinople (Istanbul) en route to the Crimea, this photograph is actually a staged tableau photographed in Fenton's London studio.

Fenton himself played the Pasha, the musician is played by the English landscape painter Frank Dillon (1823-1909).
