eClean™ Next Generation Bedside Cabinet designed by Kinneir Dufort and Bristol Maid and made by Hospital Metalcraft Limited, United Kingdom, July 2010

One way to prevent the spread of healthcare acquired infections (HCAIs) is to ensure that furniture is easy to clean.

In 2008, the Department of Health, NHS Purchasing & Supply Agency and the Design Council launched 'Design Bugs Out.' This was a challenge to redesign furniture with the aim of reducing HCAIs. This design with curved surfaces rather than corners are easier to clean and do not trap dust or dirt. The open backed design means all areas are accessible for cleaning. Design consultancy, Kinneir Dufort partnered with manufacturers Bristol Maid to come up with this product.

The first ones were sold in 2010 and started the eClean™ range of ward-based furniture.

Bristol Maid began as a company providing office furniture to the NHS in 1953 but soon grew to include medical furniture and supplies.
