A Woodburytype entitled 'Captain Richard Francis Burton', taken by Lock and Whitfield in 1876. A skilled linguist, Captain Burton (1821-1890) is best known for translating 'The Arabian Nights' and 'The Kama Sutra'. This Woodburytype is taken from a series of seven volumes entitled 'Men of Mark'.

A skilled linguist, Captain Burton (1821-1890) is best known for translating 'The Arabian Nights' and 'The Kama Sutra'. He served as a captain in the Bombay Native Infantry in Pakistan, and as a British Consul in Fernando Po, Santos, Damascus and Trieste.

This Woodburytype is taken from a series of seven volumes entitled 'Men of Mark'. Published between 1876 and 1883, each volume featured 36 portraits of prominent men of the time. A brief biographical essay by Thompson Cooper (1837-1904) accompanied each portrait.
