Anthony Ashley Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury (1801-1885) was one of the founders of the Ragged Schools Union, and its president for 40 years. The 'ragged schools' educated children in the poorest inner-city areas of London.

Shaftesbury Avenue, in the theatre district of London, was named in memory of the Earl.
