In 1855 Sir Joseph Bazalgette (1819-1891) was appointed chief engineer to the Metropolitan Board of Works. At the time, London's drainage system was woefully inadequate and public health was threatened by cholera outbreaks. Over the next twenty years, Bazalgette constructed a radical new sewerage system for London. Heralded a pioneer of public health engineering, he was knighted in 1874.
