A polychromide colour photograph of a young woman, taken by Aron Hamburger in about 1912.
Hamburger invented the polychromide process around 1910. Colour separation negatives were used to make cyan, magenta and yellow prints which were then combined to create a colour image.
This photograph was given by Hamburger to Major Adrian Klein, a fellow colour experimenter who invented a 'one-shot' colour camera in about 1935. The inscription reads: 'From Aron Hamburger to his friend Major A.B. Klein with admiration of his success in "Rainbow Chasing". From negatives made in 1912'.
