A photograph entitled 'Lord Elgin, Plenipotentiary and Ambassador of China', taken by Felice Beato in 1860.
Lord Elgin (1811-1863) served as Governor General of Canada from 1847 to 1854 and then as a diplomat in Japan and China. Elgin negotiated the treaty of 1860 which concluded the Second Opium War in China. He was Governor General of India from 1862 until his death the following year.
