A photograph entitled 'Village de Bethanie' taken by James Robertson and Felice Beato in 1857.

The village of Bethany is about two miles from Jerusalem, on the slopes of the Mount of Olives. According to the Bible, it is where Jesus performed the miracle of bringing Lazarus back to life.

Robertson and Beato began working together in 1853. Together they photographed in Constantinople (now Istanbul), Greece, Jerusalem, and Balaklava where they documented the Crimean War, continuing the work of Roger Fenton (1819-1869).
