Bullet Through An Apple

Cibachrome high speed photograph entitled 'Bullet Through An Apple', by Harold Edgerton. A .30 caliber bullet shown as it leaves an apple. The velocity of the bullet is 2800 feet per second. The apple explodes after impact. Exposure less than a microsecond.

Harold Edgerton (1903-1990) was a professor of electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He developed the use of the stroboscope (a rapidly flashing light) to make multiple very fast flashes to photograph high-speed movement. Edgerton’s photographs are scientific records that capture events too fast for the naked eye but are also striking visual images.
