Two MedMat® 700, used in hospital and community settings to providing a clean environment in which to carry out any procedure requiring a sterile environment by ErgoMedica Limited, United Kingdom, 2010-2011.

MedMat is a product designed to create a sterile environment for wound dressing either, in the hospital, community or in the field. The product has a two layer sterile system to separate the ‘clean’ elements from the ‘contaminated’ elements. The top layer protects surfaces such as surgical trolley or a patient’s bed while the bottom layer remains clean for applying new wound dressings. Both layers are contained in an integrated waste bag for all non-sharp waste material. The MedMat is secured to the surface via an adhesive strip.

The product was developed as part of The Healthcare Associated Infections (HCAI) Technology Innovation Programme, part of a 2008 Department of Health initiative to speed up the development and adoption of technologies to combat HCAIs and identify which of these technologies would make the most impact.

This example has won the Innovative Technological Concept: Originating from industry with the most potential to prevent HCAI from the International HCAI Technology Innovation Summit and Awards, 2009 and the Gold award at the Nursing Times Product Awards 2010.
