The electrical engineer Harold Edgerton developed a system to capture high-speed photographs with lots of flashes capturing different points of movement. Edgerton's process is very similar to how broadcasters manage to replay moments in slow motion in great detail by recording a higher frame rate and slowing down that frame rate for the replay.
