Multiflash photograph of a back dive in the MIT pool, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, taken by Harold Edgerton, 1941. One of forty six black and white high speed photographs by Harold Edgerton.

The electrical engineer Harold Edgerton developed a system to capture high-speed photographs with lots of flashes capturing different points of movement. Edgerton's process is very similar to how broadcasters manage to replay moments in slow motion in great detail by recording a higher frame rate and slowing down that frame rate for the replay.
