Albumen portrait of Harry John Stedman (Steadman) Cotton (1845-1917), also know as Henry James. Mounted with a hand drawn gold border. From a photograph taken by Julia Margaret Cameron (1815-1879) in 1867. Printed by Colnaghi & Co. Cotton married Mary Ryan (1848-1914) at Freshwater, Isle of Wight, on 1 August, 1867.

Stedman was a member of the Indian Civil Service, becoming chief commissioner of Assam in 1896. After retiring in 1902 he was knighted and became MP for Nottingham East. In this photograph, he is dressed as King Cophetua, a character from Alfred Tennyson's 1842 poem, 'The Beggar Maid'.
