A photographic portrait of Lionel Tennyson (1854-1886) entitled 'Lionel Tennyson In The Character Of Marquis de St Cast', taken by Julia Margaret Cameron (1815-1879) in 1868. Lionel was the second son of Alfred Tennyson (1809-1892). He is dressed in costume as the character of the Marquis de St Cast, as acted in the play 'Payable on Demand'. This play was performed at one of the private theatricals held at Julia Margaret Cameron's house in aid of Freshwater Village Hospital. Inscription 'From Life.Taken by Julia Margaret Cameron, not enlarged 1868' , handwritten in black ink, recto mount, below print.
