Magic lantern rackwork slide: No. 3 Eruption of Vesuvius (bottom lantern). Made by W C Hughes.

Rackwork magic lantern slides are constructed of a revolving circular glass slide held in a toothed brass ring all held inside a wooden frame. It is operated by moving handle which controls a ratchet, which revolves one slide in front of another stationary one to produce the effect of motion. In a single rackwork slide, a single glass revolves, in double slides, two glasses revolve in opposite directions. They were particularly popular for use in astronomical demonstrations.
