Covaflu ™ FFP3 disposable face mask

Covaflu ™ FFP3 disposable face mask to protect against pandemic flu, made by Clinova Limited, United Kingdom, 2009-2010

During the H1N1pandemic, also known as swine flu in 2009-2010 Clinova Limited found the demand for their face masks surged as people bought them to protect themselves, reminiscent of SARS in China in 2002-2003.

The Covaflu FFP3 disposable face mask filters out approximately 99% of droplets, which are 0.3 microns in size and over. Most sneezed droplets contaminated with influenza will be bigger in size than 0.3 microns. The mask conformed to World Health Organisation (WHO) and Health Protection Agency (HPA) guidelines for the minimisation of risk against influenza infection. Each mask can only be worn for 8-10 hours before its effectiveness is reduced. It is advised that each mask is disposed of by incineration.

The abbreviation FFP stands for ‘filtering facepiece’. Three classes – FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3 – offer increasing degrees of protection to the wearer according to the level of risk they are exposed to.
