Dragonfly in flight (frame 41 to 45). Late 20th century silver gelatin print, made from original chronophotographe cine-films taken by Étienne-Jules Marey and Lucien Bull between 1891-1902 in their researches on the analysis of animal locomotion.

Lucien Bull worked as an assistant to Etienne Jules Marey from 1896, and in 1902, he accepted a permanent position at the Marey Institute. The majority of his work was focussed on high speed photography, capturing what cannot be seen by the human eye. By combining electrical sparks, a lens with a rotating prism and fast 35mm film, he was able to capture images at initially 800 frames per second in 1903, increasing to 2000 per second in 1905 and 15000 by 1914.
