STC 4037C dynamic short stick microphone, c.1961.

This dynamic model was designed in the 1950s, specifically for use in television, particularly as a hand-held reporter's microphone. The black shrivel enamel paint avoided reflection from studio lights, and combined with the slim shape this made it neat and unobtrusive, and ideal for use in television studios and for interviews. It was nick-named “The Stick”.

The 4037C was one of the last omnidirectional mics in common use in the TV studio, with more directional models becoming preferred in the 1970s.

This shorter version of the microphone had less low frequency response than the longer 4037A, but was more than adequate for voice applications, especially given the convenience as a hand-held mic.
