Neumann KM56 miniature capacitor microphone, 1955-1970. Ser. No. 417. This had switchable polar response (also known as multi-pattern response) but like the KM54 it suffered from poor low frequency response and needed top cut & bass lift to sound "flat". It was not much liked in the BBC. There was also a double version of this (for stereo) known as the SM2.
