Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk-Hiller electrostatic microphone low tension stabilizer, type M59, Ser. No. 505, 1953-1955. NB - M83 inscribed on base of unit. With long grey connecting cable. This appears to be the connector & low tension stabiliser for the M59. No power supply. See Inv. No. 2012-5118/477 for microphone.

The M 59 is an electrostatic microphone of exceptionally small size and of nominally cardioid polar characteristics. It was designed by Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk and produced by the Hiller Company in Hamburg. It is a single diaphragm electrostatic microphone having nominal cardioid directional characteristics and is remarkable for its small size. Unlike most other directional electrostatic microphones it employs a metal diaphragm and is claimed to withstand high temperatures--an important consideration in television. The BBC had an M59 in occasional use in the Television Theatre starting in October 1953 and others were employed in the sound service.
