The QII (Q2) Lighting control system was designed by the BBC as a replacement for the obsolete Thorn Q-File lighting control system and console then used in most BBC television studios. It comprises a control surface and approximately 12U of rack containing the electronics.

In the mid-1980s Television Centre Studio 1 (TC1), which was being refurbished, required more than 1000 dimmers installed. The software of other lighting control systems could not apparently cope. The BBC research department designed a console that could control this many dimmers. It is a copy of the old Thorn Q-File using modern components.
