Car Radio with Cassette Player in test jig, BBC Engineering, England, c.1990s.

This car radio with cassette player is part of the BBC Heritage Collection, a collection of over 1000 objects donated by the BBC to the Science Museum in 2012. The radio was made by the Research Department of the BBC Engineering division, and it features AM and FM wavebands, a cassette player, and Radio Data System (RDS) technology which the BBC R&D division developed with European Broadcast Partners during the 1980s. RDS is a standard protocol developed to embed digital information into FM transmissions, mainly the name of a radio station as opposed to frequency. The BBC developed RDS acknowledging the increasing amount of radio stations and the difficulty for users to find the desired one. With RDS technology the radio transmitter was able to feature the information which was transmitted without creating interference to existing radio signals.
