There was a need in television for small microphones of reasonable performance for use in panel games and other programmes where the microphones would need to appear "in shot". These popular commercial ribbon units fit the bill, with affordable price and small size. The short ribbon and low power magnet made them fairly insensitive. In 1961 the BBC R&D group studied the Reslosound RB microphone and recommended that the transformer be replaced with one of higher inductance. Reslosound's sales office was located at 24 Upper Brook Street, Mayfair, London, W.I.
