During the Second World War, the then Duke of Gloucester, Prince Henry gave his backing to a Red Cross and St John's Appeal to raise money for wounded service people and prisoners of war.

By 1946, £54 million pounds was raised - all from donations. Many received badges like this one to say thank you for their contributions.
