Pollution of the environment caused by serious oil tanker disasters in the 1960s and 1970s led to the development of smaller and safer designs of vessel. This is a 1:100 scale model of Olympic Serenity, a double-hulled tanker built in Japan in 1991 for the Olympic Shipping Company. The gap between the two hulls is 2 metres at the bottom, which can be used for water ballast, and 2.5 metres at the sides. The structural integrity is uncompromised and the tanks are easier to clean.
