Model of double-hulled tanker "Olympic Serenity"

Made:
1991

Model of double-hulled tanker; 52,127 gt; 96733 dwt, "Olympic Serenity" (1991), original prototype built by Sumitomo Heavy Industries, launched 20 January 1991

Pollution of the environment caused by serious oil tanker disasters in the 1960s and 1970s led to the development of smaller and safer designs of vessel. This is a 1:100 scale model of Olympic Serenity, a double-hulled tanker built in Japan in 1991 for the Olympic Shipping Company. The gap between the two hulls is 2 metres at the bottom, which can be used for water ballast, and 2.5 metres at the sides. The structural integrity is uncompromised and the tanks are easier to clean.
