Lithograph, view of the London and Birmingham Railway when in course of construction by J. C. Bourne, published 1839. ‘Making the embankment – Woolverton Valley. June 28th 1837’ [sic]. The image shows an embankment under construction. To the right of the image the embankment has been built and a locomotive travels along the tracks towards a bridge. In the centre of the image workers form the embankment. There is a house to the right and a lake or river to the foreground with reeds/rushes at the water edge. Published as plate XXIII ‘View of the embankment near Wolverton, during its progress: Shewing the manner of forming embankments, and an accidental slip of earth. June 1837’, in ‘Drawings of the London and Birmingham Railway, by J. C. Bourne, with an historical and descriptive account by John Britton’, London : J. C. Bourne; Ackermann & Co.; C.
