One of two ColaLife Anti-Diarrhoea Kits, ‘Kit Yamoyos’ contains soap and soap tray, 8 sachets of 200 ml oral rehydration salts, zinc sulphate tablets, straw and cup for measuring salts by Colalife, packaged by PI Global and Medical Stores Limited, British, 2012
Simon and Jane Berry's idea was to use the supply chain of Coca-Cola to deliver life-saving medicines for diarrhoea. The design of this kit is to fit in the spaces between bottles of a crate of Coca-Cola. The packaging can also act as a measure and cup for water.
Diarrhoeal disease is the third leading cause of death in children 1–59 months of age. In severe cases it causes dehydration. If water and essential electrolytes (sodium, chloride, potassium and bicarbonate) are not replaced, dehydration can have severe consequences.
After a successful initial trial in Zambia in 2014, the kits were available for sale, however very few were distributed using Coca-Cola crates. Simon and Jane realised they needed to mimic Coca-Cola's marketing and distribution systems instead. Kit Yamoyo means 'Kit of Life' in Nyanja and languages spoken in Zambia. To make the kits affordable, people were given vouchers, reducing their cost. Each time a retailer redeems the voucher, a reward system was in place. As part of the marketing and promotion, we give mothers vouchers.
The kit contains the recommended treatments for diarrhoea including zinc, which is now part of the World Health Organisation's Essential Medicines List.
