Hand-painted glass lantern slide illustrating scene from 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' by Lewis Carroll. Illustrations by Sir John Tenniel, made by York and Son, published with permission of MacMillan and Co, 1870s. Slide number 16 "Yet you turned a back somersault in at the door".

This slide illustrates part of the poem 'You are Old, Father William' , recited by Alice to the Caterpillar in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland:

"You are old" said the youth, "as I mentioned before,

And have grown most uncommonly fat;

Yet you turned a back-somersault in at the door -

Pray, what is the reason of that?"
