Counterfeit phones, like this one purchased in Cameroon in 2012, were commonly available in many developing countries. In Cameroon they were sometimes referred to as ‘Chinese’ to reflect the country where they were often made. Although these counterfeits of well known mobile phone brands were typically poor quality, they could also include additional desirable features. This example was designed to mimic a popular phone produced by BlackBerry. It also has a built in FM radio receiver. Authentic BlackBerry mobile phones, rather than counterfeits, were very expensive to buy in Cameroon at this time.
