Okia G18 mobile telephone with space for two SIM cards and Arabic numbering, made by Okia, possibly Dubai, 2007-2012.

This mobile phone was designed to mimic a model that Nokia, a well known European mobile phone manufacturer, might have designed. It was bought in Cameroon in 2012 and is designed to work with a solar power charger, as well as a standard electricity supply. In Cameroon at this time electricity supply was very patchy, especially in rural areas, so a solar charger seems like a good solution. However, while solar chargeable phones were sometimes used by European visitors to Cameroon, locals without electrical supplies often found cheaper alternatives for charging their phones, for example walking to the nearest electrical supply.
