Tablet tray for 'Progynova' pills, empty, by Bayer, Germany, 2005-2013. This tablet tray was donated by a young trans individual to represent an aspect of their gender transition experience. 'Progynova' pills are a form of hormone replacement treatment that can be used to replace falling levels of oestrogen, associated with menopause. It can also be taken to aid the development of female characteristics as part of gender-affirming treatment for transitioning individuals.

This empty foil tablet tray contained Progynova tablets, a hormone medication containing oestradiol, a form of the sex hormone oestrogen. It was donated by a young trans individual to represent an aspect of their gender transition experience. About it the young person said, “Hormone therapy was incredibly important for me. It marked the turning point in my health and happiness”.

Hormone therapies like Progynova can be taken by individuals who are gender transitioning to aid the development of certain female characteristics. It is also prescribed as a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to treat the symptoms of menopause.

This object was donated following its display within a temporary exhibition at the Science Museum titled "What makes your gender?" in 2013, curated by a group of fifteen young transgender individuals working in partnership with the charity Gendered Intelligence.
