Poster, Midland Railway, 'Blackpool - Glorious Sea. Health & Pleasure'. After 1894. The poster shows an aerial view of the coast line including all three Blackpool piers, the Tower (built 1894), steamer ships, sail boats, beach huts and so on. Below the 'Blackpool' title is a crest with 'Progress' written below it and four small illustrations on the crest. The lower half of the poster has 'Glorious Sea. Health & Pleasure.'. Below this are lists of the various attractions regarding 'Climate', 'Special attractions' and 'Accommodation'. Roundels in the lower left and right corners show the promenade and the lifeboat. Midland Railway is written along bottom of the poster.
Posters and eye-catching travel guides were used by railway companies at stations to promote leisure activities, holidays and travel opportunities to passengers waiting for their train. Railway companies regularly commissioned graphic artists to design the posters to make them visually engaging and market attractive things to do by train to encourage more customers.
