Marble bust of Augustus Siebe, by Thomas Fowke, London, England, 1870

This marble portrait bust of German engineer (Christian) Augustus Siebe, arrived in the museum as part of approximately 400 objects from the (then) Siebe Gorman museum which was being disposed of. Whilst it is by a relatively minor sculptor, it is of one of the most well-known names in engineering history, with Augustus Siebe – later Siebe Gorman – chiefly known for his contributions to the development of diving and other breathing equipment. It was one of the pre-eminent British engineering firms of the 19th and 20th centuries. It is not known for what purpose the bust was made, but it dates to 1870 – 2 years before the death of Augustus Siebe. It is a valuable addition to other Siebe Gorman material and representations of figures from the history of science and technology held within SMG collections.
