Vertical single-cylinder atmospheric or ‘free piston’ gas engine, made by Crossley Brothers Ltd, Openshaw, Manchester, 1874, no 1224. Slide valve, flame ignition, speed 80 rpm, power output 1 horsepower.

Label embossed on engine shaft: "Otto Langen & Crossley's Patents Crossley Bros Manchester Sole English & Colonial Makers".

This engine powered a dough mixer in a bakery.

This was the first type of internal combustion engine to compress the explosive mixture before firing it. It was built to Otto and Langen's patent by Crossley Brothers of Manchester. Otto and Langen's atmospheric gas engine was the world's first commercially successful internal combustion engine, and Crossley Brothers were highly important in its diffusion into the wider world, holding the manufacturing rights for the whole world except for Germany. They built approximately 1,300 atmospheric engines starting in 1869.
