ZETA generator model, made by Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co. Ltd, Trafford Park, c.1954.

This is a model of the ZETA generator, the UK's first nuclear fusion experiment. Metropolitan-Vickers of Trafford Park was at the leading edge of electrical energy research and development in the 1950s. In 1954 it made ZETA, the Zero Energy Thermonuclear Assembly. This remarkable machine tried to find out how humans could make electricity through nuclear fusion, the energy source of the sun.
